President Obama - Yeah! Now what?

Believe it or not, I don't actually think Obama is perfect. The idea of having our healthcare system socialized does worry me a bit. As a matter of fact, tonight I was talking about that with a Japanese student of mine who works at a pharmaceutical company!

If Obama succeeds in nationalizing the healthcare system in the United States it will have a tremendous impact on the local economy down here in Osaka, Japan. As it is now with privatized health care, doctors in the United States and pharmaceutical companies in Japan alike can set their own prices.

If it's nationalized, everybody has to drop their price down to what the American government decides - no if's or but's about it. Doctors will have a harder time earning a salary that's decent enough to survive on and pay off those medical school loans, and they'll have an even harder time earning enough cash to set up and continue running their own practice. While it's nice to say that the average person will have an easier time affording medical care, we might see a huge drop in quality and many doctors might be challenged with trying to make ends meet. Not all doctors are rich.

But at the same time our current system isn't perfect either.

Where is Augustine's "City on the Hill" and who lives there?
And perhaps more importantly: How do they live - with each other?
